Thanks Murray,

These meals look yum. My kids love fish and chips!

How do you finish your fish? Do you just stop feeding for three days or do you separate those fish you want to consume and then not feed those ones? How long does it take them to purge.

BTW how do you separate the fish... using a big fish landing net?

Hi Martin,

Some people are more sensitive to 'off-flavours' (usually described as a muddy taste) in freshwater fish than others.....and some freshwater species are more susceptible to off-flavours than others.

Purging fish will rid them of these off-flavours. Purging involves placing the fish in a separate tank and withholding food for three to five days (and sometimes longer). Some people add salt to the tank, too.

The freshwater aquaculture industry are keen to promote the idea of purging because they like to present freshwater fish in their best possible light.

I don't bother purging because I like the taste of Jade Perch just the way that they are. If I was going to feed the fish to other people, however, I'd probably purge them first.....just in case.

I use a small net to catch the fish.

Here is a recipe from Martin A1, I will be giving that one a run for sure. I have always been a bit partial to a bit of HOT.

Here is a recipe for Thai fish cakes for you mate!

Search the site as there appear to be heaps of "Thai Fish Cake" recipes. I have long been a sucker for a Thai fish cake entree. Don't forget the sweet chili or cucumber dipping sauce.

Well I can't get all the spices the way my Mom use to make it, but I can still get the Masala (spices) in packet form from the local Indian or Pakistani spice shop, plenty around. Check out the this link. http://www.shanfood.com/
The one I use for my Jade Perch is called Lahori Fish Mix (very tasty) and another one is Fish Seasoning mix. All you need is 1 Kg fish, garlic, ginger and olive oil (or any oil you prefer). You can use water or lemon to make a paste or simply sprinkle the ready mix masala on the fish, add garlic, ginger and squeeze a lemon. Marinate for atleast 30 mins, fry in hot oils, until brown, serve with fresh salad.

To find the spice centre, do a google search with the root words like Shan Masala, Sydney or Brisbane....etc.

What's happening, are you guys eating fish or what? Well here you can see some yummy Jade perches around 250grams. I have 200 jades and need to off load aroung 150 as the home made system cannot support the colony. The ammonia and nitrite is too much and also the solid waste is stressing the clarifier. Man, I can tell you these white flake fish are soo tasty, specially when I marinate them in lemon juice with fish masala, garlic and ginger.

Good one mate.
How old are your Jades ? How long did it take to grow them to that size.
Fill up your freezer, I am just about out of my freezer stock now, and I do not have any advanced fish at the moment.
I am getting used to having my weekly fish dinner, and soon there will not be any.
I will not have any that are BBQ size until August/Sept. But, then I will have plenty of Silvers and I hope the first of my Murray Cod. I will have to wait another year before I can sample the first of my 150 Sleepy Cod.

Hi Gary / Murray,

Your perch looks clean and healthy. I originally had put some 200 fingerlings
bought from Ausyfish in Mar07 and now after 12 months they are around 150grams. They could have grown to 350grams if the water temp would have stayed above 18 ~ 20 deg, but in Sydney we have 4 months or so when the temp is below 12 degs. I have probably eaten 100 Jades and have lots and lots of vegies grown in the growbed.

I am planning to try perhaps some Catfish and Yabbies in bottles, need something which will grow in lower temps as well. I am also planning to somehow raise the water temp by 5 ~ 7 degs using solar.

Hi Salman,

How would you go with Rainbow Trout during the colder months?
