have been reading a lot about soldier fly larva use as fish food
and the secondary products of a good worm bed base, food waste disposal, and just plain interesting - combined with aquaponics very self sustaining.

in case you are interested - there are a few articles out there on it - very easy, the systems is self collecting, in the majority odourless

anyone know if the compost bins designed for larva production are avialable in australia? made by a group in Louisiana USA called "ESR LLC" (?) see their website for image and design
been working on my own version for personal use, but nothing like the patent designed version if you can get it (and afford it!)

HI r Carte,
Gary Donaldson's new book "The Urban Aquaponics Manual" deals with the BSF as a food source for Jade and Silver Perch. There is also an article written by Gary about BSF coming out in the next edition of the Practical Aquaponics for Everyone Mag.
Gary has harvested and used BSF very successfully as a food source for his Jade Perch.
Good links in your post Richard...Thanks.

thanx murray
also much thanx for your book i purchased recently
got my mind racing with possibilities and setups

looking at setting up my tropical fish breeding (a quite intensive commercial setup) as the 'aqua' side (maybe a few perch as well) and some greenhouse tomatoes/cucumbers on the 'ponics' side at my wife's school in sydney where she teaches a bit of horticulture (and i do the majority of the hard labour)

i think the school kids will really get into this sort of sustainable setup
hope to setup the barrel type mini systems as well, for them to duplicate at home

as i get it going, i will pass on images and most likely heaps of questions to this site

looking forward to the journey

Hi Richard,
I have put my Aquaponics Kits (http://www.aquaponics.net.au/category15_1.htm)into 4 high schools in recent months. Aquaponics is a wonderful educational tool.
It is a bit of a "lost art" growing veggies etc, and anything that can be done to teach children (and adults) to "grow your own" is a very worthwhile activity.
The blue barrels is a good way to go.....It is most important just to get started. Starting small is a good way to test and learn how it all works.
It is easy to scale-up later when ready.
Good luck, and looking forward to the photos and progress reports.

Hi Richard, glad you are enjoying the Urban Aquaponics Manual (http://www.urbanaquaponics.com.au/products.html), actually it is Gary's work. I just helped him with the photos.
