Hey Guys,
I am an MSc (aquaculture) Masters student, now working in the National Institute of Water and Atmospherics Aquaculture facility. I work in the Egg room looking after Kingfish and Grouper eggs through to larvae when they get transferred to larval rearing. We also have salmon, abalone, mussels, oysters and eels on site.
I am really interested in setting up a backyard aquaponics system, but am thinking maybe i should start small with something like a desktop system. Would love to know how people have gotten started... as far as i can tell from the forum most have gone straight to small backyard jobbies.
Also the number of freshwater species suitable in NZ is very limited pretty much eels are the best bet. Has anyone got experience with eels?:confused:

Hi Irenev,
Welcome, I am very sure we will all be able to learn heaps from you.

It is very wise to start small. I recommend the use of old bath tubs or similar to get going on. If you wanted to go even smaller than that, the hardware stores here in Aussie all have low cost plastic rectangular bins that are a very good way to go in the beginning. I would think the same kind of products are avbl in NZ.

I moved your post down into General Discussion as it will be better suited here.
