I am just starting to plan my system and I would like some advice on what everyone thinks is the best way to go. For a start I would like to use some recycled tanks. I am thinking of getting some old bath tubs.
Is this sensible? Is there some better type of recycled containers that I might look for ?

Hi Josh,
Old bath tubs will make very good grow beds.
Recycled blue drums (cut in halves horizontally or vertically) are another option. If using any recycled container, make sure that you are aware of what they contained before you got them.
Other aquaponicists have happened on all manner of interesting opportunities. Take a look at FoodFish' thread. He has a national reputation for dump-thumping and he has created a nice little system using bits 'n' pieces that he's found around the place.

Hi Josh
Bunnings are selling 500L plastic water tanks for $95....If you scout around you might be able to get hold of some 1000L IBC containers from chemical firms such as CIBA for next to nothing................I use them , after a good clean out.
If you know a friendly baker ...bread trays can be used in all sorts of ways.....oh, and you can get a 360 gallons/hour 12 volt bilge pump from a good fishing tackle shop for about $25

Hi Darashee,
See the second edition of Practical Aquaponics Magazine
Here (http://www.aquaponicshq.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25)
There is a step by step on how to build good strong grow bed stands from concrete block and treated pine sleepers.
If you wanted to save a bit more money you could get concrete blocks and recycled hardwood from a recycling place.
I hope this helps.
