Ok, I'm not sure on this but do you need to do water changes at all with the AP systems? I've heard some info from someone before saying you need to do some water change to ensure the health of the fish but my understanding of AP originally was that you don't need to do any water changes because the purpose of the plants was to filter out all the water so it can return back to the fish clean.

I do know you need to top up the water once in a while as the water can evaporate over time.

Hi Pooh Bear,

No.....in normal circumstances, you don't need to do water changes with an aquaponics system.

The exception to the rule, however, is if your water tests reveal high/rising ammonia/nitrite levels.....in which case you change just enough water to get things under control.

In this situation, you should also be looking for the cause of the high levels and:

stop feeding
remove uneaten food from the fish tank
put more water through the system if possible

Usually, you will only need to replace the water lost to evaporation and transpiration.
