FF, The barrel filter I have cleans the water very quickly, about 2 days for the 2300 ltr tank. That is with the UV light on. Trouble with the UV light it takes Boron and magnesium out of the system, so I don,t use the filter with the UV light on for very long, just a couple of days until the water is clean.
My filter has a series of sponge blocks in it that the water has to pass through and the amount of gunk those filter blocks collect is amazing.

FF,
Last summer I used the Bio filter for about 2 months with the UV light on and the water was crystal clear. My tomato bushes started to have yellow veined leaves and the leaves also began to curl. Did not look good.
A lady visitor who came to see my system, and was an experienced hydroponic gardener, spotted the problem in a flash. I turned the light off, applied some mineral fert to my grow beds and the tomato bushes recovered over about 4 weeks.

The way i have set it up is this tank is in its own little loop [a tank to purg fish and hospital tank and to view if visitors are coming] also if its not beeing used for the above by turning on a valve it just goes as a nother tank in the existing system
