Whats the best biofilter media for your RAS?

Other techniques are used and shown here (http://www.aquamerik.com/)
But the best is to use a media who is always turning in a air and water flow.

Thank you for the feedback. Are you operating a RAS? If so did you buy it or make it. I'm looking for schematics to build a small RAS. Well I better get back to my fish hatchery.

The best media that you can find
This is very similar (exactly the same!) to the Raschig rings I intend to use in my home distilallation tower. These are made from ceramics, but have exactly the same shape as the plastic ones (which are apparently patented?).

Hi,

The total surface area of a bio-filter media is usually deemed to be one of the more important criteria.

I've tried a variety of types of media including manufactured plastic (Kaldness K1), polystyrene (beanbag) beans, oyster shells, clay pebbles and gravel. Others that I've heard of include, plastic filter beads, hair curlers, pot scrubbers and chopped up sections of plastic garden hose.

While they don't offer the surface area of some other options, I still like oyster shells. They're cheap, they're predictable in their impact on pH, there is no issue with potential toxicity......and they work.
