Where to get Duckweed from?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me where you can obtain some duckweed?
Are there any dams or rivers in the Brisbane region that people know of, that has some duckweed?

Peter,
Plenty in the "water plant" sections at the B store at Booval or Rocklea for free!! Just buy a drink at the cafe, drink the contents and fill the bottle back up with DW from the trough! The "pet" store at Karralee round-about has some, as well as most Aquariums, but they want to sell it to you of course.

But, there is plenty in Pullen Pullen creek. Just look for the very still back water pools and you'll find lots. Every pond and dam around us in this area has DW. Just be carefull when collecting it that you pick out the Azolla, not as good for fish food and can outgrow the DW.

x 2 - watch out for tha azolla. It's a bigger plant than duckweed and grows faster (speaking from bitter experience with a pond taken over by the stuff). I can vouch for the plant at the big B at Rocklea being the right stuff.

Hi Bazz,

You may be able to get some duckweed from a local aquarium supply shop.

Maybe try your local botanic gardens and employ the "Bunya Boy" collection and transportation technique.

My local plant nursery ponds I have seen tend to be covered in duckweed also, and our local Coy farm has a fair amount on some ponds.

Thanks . I,ve looked at about 30 dams on a Sunday drive to no available. Contacted a couple of major nurseries and they say they dont try to get it in as it is a noxious weed....I think only if you let it get out of control. Adelaide botanic gardens might be next stop or some pet shop. thanks guys.

Which ignores the fact that the duckweed species that they could access are actually natives.

Duckweed is sometimes thought of a problems but in reality it is more likely to be the indicator of a problem since it grows best where there is nutrient run-off.
