I also live in the Sydney area, and they came naturally about 2 months ago. My BSF chamber gave me a few handfuls, then the cold set in and I got no more.
Might have to wait around for the warmer months like me. Remember, if you build it, it will come.

I live in the Parramatta area.
In the past, I always saw BSF around my compost bins but thought they were wasps. That is until I got interested in Aquaponics.
My parents who live in the heart of Sydney (Mascot), also have BSF around. Though they do not have a biopod.
Will post pics once I get more black soldier flies when it gets hotter. At the moment, I'm using it as a worm farm.

I have only seen 1 BSF (in May!!) here in bayside Melbourne, hanging around my compost tumblers. Try as I can, I cant get a colony going. Too cold now though but nonetheless frustrating over last summer.

Old Toongabbie is very close to me. Pop over when I get my system setup.
I still don't have my aquaponics setup yet. Been researching for about 6 months now.
I am going to build about a 3000 L system by the end of the year if all goes well. Of course it will have to be CHOPS.
My first job is to level the ground so I can build a greenhouse.

Mate I'm with you.
I am about to post my biopod for sale as I cannot get a colony growing no matter how much I try.
Interestingly, the BSF larvae will hang out in the worm farm and compost bin right next to the biopod, but in general, nothing much occurs.
I've tried full sun, part sun, and in the glass house. I've even attempted to 'seed' the biopod with larvae and some flies. But try as I might, absolute failure.. :(
After having the biopod for over 2 years now, I really do think, that harvesting BSF are only suited to year round warmer climates..

Hi Tony,
I'm sorry to hear that your BioPod is not working out for you.
As cool as Tasmania is relative to many parts of Australia, you still have a summer that should more than suit BSF production.
What are you putting in it in the way of feedstuff?

Hey Gary..
Well we do and don't have a decent summer. This year it has been that cold right up till late Jan, that no one's soil based tomatoes for instance aren't ripening. Seedlings aren't germinating, and I planted 6 lots of pumpkins and even at late Dec they wouldn't grow. The soil was just too cold.
As for Biopod feed, lost of fruit and vege scraps, milk soaked bread, and anything else that typically goes in..
So it just hasn't been warm enough for long enough this summer. By April it'll start getting cold again.. :(
Cheers
T
