Hi guys,
Does anyone know where I can get some trout fingerlings? I live in central Victoria. Is it too late in the year to get some? What are they worth roughly? Thanx

Hi guys,
I rang the man in ballarat and he says he has yearlings for sale. My question is how many should I get for a 800 Lt tank. Also I am having trouble in that my pH seems to be rising. I got a reading of 8.4 the other day which I was very surprised at as my pH normally sits around 7.4. I dosed it with white vinegar and got it back to 7.6 but I checked again today and it is back up to 8.2. Why?
I have recently installed a UV light that a friend had on his goldfish pond and no longer needed. He said it is good for sterilizing the water. Can this be causing my pH spike? I intend on picking up the trout on Saturday morning so I need answers to my problem ASAP. Thanx

Thanx Fishfood,
My system has been running for over 6 months with no dramas.
My setup has two tanks, a small one (Approx 250 Lts) which is under the grow bed. The growbed consists of scoria which is well rinsed after 6 mths of use.
The second tank at the back is approx. 800 lts and is fed by a pump in the smaller tank and then overflows into the smaller tank. The pump also disperses water over the grow bed on a timer which on for 15 mins and off for 15 mins. This works between 7am and 11pm. There are airstones working 24 hrs in both tanks.
I have 18 small goldfish in the smaller tank and have recently (over a month now) added the second larger tank with the hope of using it for some food fish.
As I said earlier my pH was OK until the last week. I am taking some water in to test at work tonight with pH meter in case my test kit is giving me false readings. The only other change I have done is added the greenhouse over a month ago to try and keep the temp and weather under some kind of control.

Hi,
I suggest that you dispense with the UV light. It won't contribute anything useful to your system. Aquaponics is an eco-system so you don't want/need to kill the micro-organisms that inhabit it. The sooner everything achieves a state of balance, the better.

Hi I took your advice and removed UV light from system. I have added 20 yearling trout from Ballarat yesterday. My pH has also settled back to 7.2 I will test daily for a while to keep an eye on it. Is there anywhere that I can get fish food from locally? Guy in Ballarat uses Barra food. I got a couple of kilo of #2 off him to start with.

If the protein of the Barra food is above 40% it will be fine.
If you want to find a local supplier of Trout food, you want to call:

and ask them who the Vic distributor is. They wont sell direct to you unless its a pallet load.

Hi Phillo.
I too got my second lot of trout from Ballarat last Saturday.
The Barra food they use is also a trout food, it does both.
The maker is Laucke Mills, Sturt Hwy. Daveyston, South Australia. Look up their website www.lauckemills.com.au & click on ' Distributors ' to find the nearest to you. Ballarat gets theres from The Haymarket, Ballarat.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Laurie.
