Just got back from a camping trip where the yabbie nets filled up with small fish and turtles. My wife was begging me to let her take a turtle (5cm diameter) home to keep in the AP tank (it's not even set up yet!).
Anyone know how they go with fish? will they eat them?

They will go great with the fish, although the fish numbers will keep diminishing.

I have had 2 turtles in with my Koi, Tilapia and Suckerfish for nearly two years. They were babies at the size of a coin and now bigger than my hand. They don't seem to bother the fish at all except to complete with them for pellets at feed time.
Can't vouch for native Aussie tortoises though. These are asian tortoises. I don't think fish are part of their diet. Have also had small fish in with them and they survived. My Tilapia were born in the pond with these two turtles.

I have a red ear slider that is getting too big for my 20L and was pondering this question, but these turtles have salmonella, I was wondering if the salmonella could transfer to the plants somehow, and then to us.
also, my turtle loves to eat fishies, but was going to put him into a 160gal pond.

Despite regular feeding and a varied diet, my Krefft's Turtle (Emydura krefftii) had a healthy appetite eating over different times my rainbows, gudegons, gold fish and red claw crays. The only fish to prove it could outwit my turtle constantly was a spangled perch.:)

I would omit turtles from a production system. Pathogen risks and fish losses are the two main reasons, but there are more.
