Hi Everyone,
On a recent trip to Hong Kong I had the opportunity to visit the local fish market on the weekend. In Hong Kong seafood is not considered 'fresh' unless it's still living. You basically pick your seafood meal from the tanks and then the restaurant next door prepares it for you.... very nice food!
I though you might be interested to see the tank set-ups, size and variety of the fish/seafood they are holding. I could not figure out where the water supply came from but assume it was filtered salt water direct from Hong Kong harbour (yuk!)

There were some seriously big Cod type fish in these small tanks. It was a bit sad really but who am I to judge.
I actually got to feed these big fish the dead prawns from the prawn holding tanks. It was very cool!!

Yes and this was just one or two stalls of about 15 (mostly the same). They were pumping a lot of water through the tanks as you can imagine.

The tank designs were interesting (many were designed for display of course but some of the tiled jobs seemed a little more practical.

Some of the filteration they use over there is also impressive. They have been handling fish for a lot longer than us.

Hi Martin

I spent 7 years in Hong Kong. Most of the fish is imported. A lot of grouper and Barra. from Brunei. We have a lot of aquaculture here.

As you pointed out HK Harbour is heavily polluted as are most HK waters with high levels of heavy metals esp.

You need to be a bit careful then picking imported fish from local fish in HK.

Here in Brunei, the fish markets don't have many live fish unfortunately. Usually though, the fish is fresh and no problems here with polluted water as there is very little industry apart from of course the oil industry.

Much of the fish in the market is cage farmed.

I bought my Barra. fry from a hatchery that sells to the cage farmers. The guy was very shocked when I told him I* was going to raise my Barra. in a 1000 litre tank at the side of my house.

I taught in northeastern China for a while. I was amazed that the seafood sold in small restaurants and even by street vendors was generally alive. "Fresh" shrimp from a street vendor by my apartment meant literally living shrimp. Wish we could get the same in the midwestern U.S.
