The recirculating is finally all underway with Macrobrachium rosenburgii prawns and lettuce (with a few basil seedlings preparing to make their mark). Unfortuately I live almost 2 hours drive from where I set it up but never fear, I've given the marine biologists who operate the prawn nursery where it's setup the lowdown on how keep it happy till I return. Fingers crossed it stays well, I'm already worried!

Hi,
I've just Googled Macrobrachium Rosenbergii with a view to learning more about them.
You obviously enjoy a challenge......they appear to be difficult to breed.
I look forward to reports on your progress.

With continuous flow gravel beds I've heard their is an issue with the plant roots. How apparent is this? for a quick growing crop such as lettuce is this any issue? The gravel bed for my system is about 13cm deep of gravel with about 6cm of the bottom of it continous flowing down to the exit point. I know flood and drain would be ideal but since I already have the system up and runing I'm wondering how well the continous flow will go.
Any info would be much appreciated,
By the way does anyone know how good those backyard aquaponics books and dvd's are? I would love some more solid information on aquaponics.

Hi AquaNZ,
I have not had a system using continuous flow so I cannot comment. My system is flood and drain. Someone else may be able to help you there.
The book by Joel Malcolm is not bad. I have a copy and it was a help to me when I got started. The DVD's that are included with the book are of minimum value.
The next edition of our newsletter will have some really good information for beginners and advanced aquaponic people alike, so it will be worth the wait to see the third edition of Practical Aquaponics for Everyone Newsletter.
