    Taiwan Chronicles

I have started this thread to document the new system I am building here in Taiwan. Mostly because it is very boring and I need something to do. I love to eat fish and fresh vegetables as they are good for you or at least that is what they tell me..LOL

OK, Here we go, I have very limited space in which to build the system. It is on rental property. Being in a country where the main language is Chinese and I cannot speak Chinese. This will be a huge task to complete. To find the simplest things.

At any rate any ideas for the system and comments will be welcomed. Right now it is planned to have gravel filled grow-beds. As this will support a wider variety of planets.

Right now I have a 500 liter fish tank may add another 500 Liter fish tank if I can find the room.

So this is the start of the build, any idea's post a reply. Thanks

    Hi Pugo
Seen you bringing up the language barrier in numoros threads they speak chinese (mandarin) and you don't.
I suggest you get on a Koi forum (Taiwan/China/Hongkong) to get the key words you need, and be pointed towards the supliers of the things you need for the DIY parts you need in the Aqua/filtration dep.
Taiwan is fairly big on Koi export to Europe and the US. And Koi/goldfish/pond keeping is huge in the Mandarin speaking world.

Okay the Barrels have arrived... Anyone have any idea on a filtration system? As I just starting this build I don't wish to miss any new ideas.. I'm going to add one more fish tank so I come up to 1000 liters..

Wouldn't it be a good idea to start off small and 'learn', rather than dive in with a larger tank capacity (pardon the pun) and overwhelm yourself and your knowledge..?

I've started small, but have big plans, if it works out. If it doesn't, hey ho.., it'll all fit in my local dumpster...

No fish were hurt in the making of this post.

Hi Nelson been a while, haven't heard from you. Hope things are going well for you.. I kind of felt this was a small system, As I have plans for a much larger system when I go back to the Philippines. I want to build all the components that make a larger system just on a small scale so 1000 liters seems as small as I can go and still use all the filtration system components because that experience is the true value for me. I have kept Aquariums all of my life I had them as large as 120 gallon tanks and the learning curve on those were costly as ornamental fish are not cheap. I have dealt with PH and Nitrite and nitrate for years. The only big difference is they are not is a glass box this time and the filters are much bigger. Not to mention the growbeds. As I am more on this Fish side of things, than I am on the plant side as I understand it a little more. You will be welcome to come check it out once I get it up and running.. should be fun don't you think ?

Fair comment... I didn't realise you had so much experience with fish in the past. What brings you to the beautiful island of Taiwan and how long are you staying. Where in the Philippines are you based..?

    Hi Michael,

It's good to see that you've obtained the main components of your system.

For our other members.......Michael and I have been discussing the design and construction of his system....off forum. He's kindly consented to bring it to the forum so that we can use it as a learning experience for other forum members.

Michael has a fairly small backyard and a slightly larger undercover space.

I've suggested to Michael that he build a a Queenslander....and that we start by assembling a recirculating aquaculture system.

We encourage newcomers to ask questions.....and our more experienced members to chime in and answer them .....as we travel through the build.

The first thing we'll do is draw the system up......and explain how it will work.
